Beyond the Nominal Cost of Abortion

The Real Cost of an abortion

Cost Of Abortion

Abortion is a medical procedure that is being undertaken in order to remove the uterus of the embryo or the fetus from the womb of a woman. The cost of an abortion can be universal for whatever reason that the procedure has to be undertaken, but the actual impact might vary from a person to another person.

As stated above, this is being done for several reasons. Firstly, the most common reason of many women why this has to be conducted is because of an unwanted pregnancy. Most often than not, the pregnancy is usually a result of a case of a rape. Hence, if the woman chose to not carry and deliver it, she can always make the choice to abort it. On the other hand, the second most popular reason is seen to be necessary, most especially by every medical practitioner. This is when the pregnancy is harmful for the woman.  Of course, there are some unfortunate pregnancies that might only adversely affect the health of the pregnant women. If this will not be done, it will only cost two lives. Hence, it seems to be more advisable to choose the lesser evil, which is to save a life than to lose two without doing anything about it.

Nevertheless, it must be clarified that the real cost of an abortion does not only rely to its monetary and financial value. As a matter of fact, a more “costly” return is seen beyond the economics of it. In a general point of view, there are at least two (2) fields that we can consider as the major cost of an abortion. These are the health cost and the emotional or cultural cost.

The Cost of an abortion to the Health of the Woman

On the one hand, there are some major aspects that we can discuss when it comes to the cost of an abortion to the health of the woman. We can start to the physiological side effects of undergoing this kind of procedure. For instance, from the time that the procedure has been made, the patient will feel some abdominal pain as well as cramping to the stomach part of the body. There might be some instances also that shell will experience nausea and frequent vomiting.

Aside from that, there are also several serious complications that are associated with abortion. For example, the patient might experience heavy and persistent bleeding as well as spotting in the body. There were also some reports that it can lead to infection and damage to some other organs of the body. In rare, but yet significant cases, another cost of an abortion may also be death.

The Emotional or Cultural Cost of an abortion

On the other hand, another major cost of an abortion has something to do with its emotional and cultural costs. These are all non-monetary, which means that they cannot be accounted. However, their impact to the woman is a lot more significant and almost permanent. For instance, the emotion impact or cost of an abortion curves an invisible scar to a woman, which cannot be cured by any medical procedure. This is also true with the cultural aspect of the patient, since we need to accept that it is still not widely accepted by everybody.
